Make Your Honeymoon a Wild Adventure with SAASA

Imagine beginning your honeymoon surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, with monkeys swinging through the trees and colourful birds filling the skies above you. You and your partner can trade the usual sightseeing stops for something a little different, discovering the wildlife and beautiful natural surroundings of the Garden Route. If you’re planning a honeymoon in the area, the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA) offers three unforgettable wildlife experiences in The Crags, just outside Plettenberg Bay.

Home to Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary, SAASA gives you the opportunity to explore the natural world together while discovering some fascinating animal residents. Each sanctuary offers something different, making it easy to turn your visit into a memorable day out. Each visit brings its own sights, sounds and opportunities to learn something new.

Meet the Residents of Monkeyland

One experience you and your partner won’t want to miss is Monkeyland, the world’s first free-roaming, multi-species primate sanctuary. Set within a 12-hectare indigenous forest, the sanctuary is home to more than 550 rescued primates, including monkeys, lemurs and gibbons. You and your partner can embark on an hour-long guided walking tour through the forest, where knowledgeable guides share fascinating facts and stories about the different species. You might even spot some of the more curious residents approaching the viewing areas. Keep an eye on the treetops as you watch the residents swing between branches, explore their surroundings and interact with one another. It is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and perhaps capture a few special photographs along the way.

A Colourful Escape at Birds of Eden

For a truly enchanting experience, Birds of Eden offers you and your loved one an enchanting experience beneath the world’s largest single-dome free-flight aviary. Spanning 2.3 hectares, this spectacular sanctuary is home to more than 1,500 birds representing approximately 120 species and subspecies. As you follow the winding walkways together, you’ll encounter colourful birds flying freely overhead, lush vegetation and a beautiful waterfall. Take your time here, as there is always something interesting to spot overhead. You can explore at your own pace or request a guided tour at no additional cost, giving you plenty of time to appreciate the colourful residents at your own pace.

Get Up Close with Magnificent Predators

There is something about seeing the power and beauty of big cats up close. At Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary, you and your partner can encounter rescued and rehomed animals, including lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs and jaguars. As you follow the paths on a guided walking safari, listen for the rumble of a lion’s roar, watch the cats move through their enclosures and take in their coats and presence. Your guide will share the stories behind these animals, offering insight into their personalities, needs and the challenges they face.

A Honeymoon with a Purpose

Beyond the tours themselves, SAASA’s commitment to responsible wildlife tourism makes your visit even more meaningful. All three sanctuaries follow a strict no-contact policy, allowing you to appreciate the animals without disturbing them. Their focus on education, animal welfare and conservation ensures that your honeymoon supports a greater purpose.
