Blue Mountain Lodge: A genuine ‘Out of Africa’ Experience

The exclusive 5-Star Blue Mountain Lodge sits at the foot of a mountain range, which is part of the Kruger to Canyon Biosphere, an area designated by UNESCO as an international biosphere reserve.

The beauty of the area is undeniable, with canyons, winding rivers and lush mountains, guests will feel as if they have been transported to a lost world in the African terrain.

Blue Mountain Lodge is situated between Sabie and Hazyview, in Mpumalanga, and boasts the most fertile and picturesque landscape with a beautiful avocado farm. Conveniently, it is only a 25-minute drive away from Hazyview.

Upon arrival I was welcomed by the friendly staff and offered a complimentary glass of freshly squeezed juice. The reception area was brimming with class and style, the opulence of the Victorian-styled Lodge shined through the whole building.

The lodge is easily accessible. Guests can access the lodge by helicopter as there is a helicopter pad, or they can make use of the private shuttle service.

Wildlife in the area is abundant and the lodge is a short drive to the famous Kruger National Park.

Luxury services

Blue Mountain Lodge offers incredible luxury services, such as accommodation, safari drives, a restaurant and a wedding venue.

Nelson Mandela and other famous celebrities are known to have regularly stayed at this luxurious establishment.

What truly makes Blue Mountain lodge unique is the positioning of the accommodation. There are five separate buildings that are spread over the beautiful premises. Each building has a unique Colonial architectural style.

The lodge has a presidential suite, eight romantic suites and four duplex suites with access to a shaded courtyard. There are also two manor houses, which are close to the lakes and the forest.

My partner and I enjoyed a stay in one of their eight Victorian Suites. Which are decorated in the regency style and have incredible views of the surrounding nature.

The accommodation

I could feel a lot of warmth and class as I walked into our beautifully decorated room. The room was fitted with an aircon, coffee station, bar fridge, free Wi-Fi access, and a gorgeous fireplace that was prepared for us when we went out to eat for dinner.

When it comes to activities on offer, there is no limit – play croquet, go hiking, enjoy fishing or birdwatching. For those with an adventurous spirit, try the helicopter excursions, hot air balloon flights, quad-biking, river rafting and horse riding.

The safaris are not to be missed as you will see lions, elephants, hippos and many other incredible African animals on these expeditions. There is also a massage service for those, who would like to unwind and feel pampered during their stay.

The restaurant

The restaurant serves award-winning gourmet cuisine. Housed in a Manor house, the restaurant has romantic views of the litchi plantation and serves African/French style cuisine.

I was not disappointed when I began my full-course meal by starting off with a Marsala soup that was simply amazing, as well as my second starter of a fish cake with pineapple salsa.

For the main course I had the Sole with caramelized onions, baby potatoes, and a fried tomato with lemon butter sauce. This had to be the best fish I have had in a long time!

To end my amazing taste-experience. I had the baked pear with a layer of roasted macadamia nuts, and cinnamon ice-cream topped with a sugar string.

To make our stay even more memorable, it was my partner’s birthday and much to our surprise and delight, the staff made a birthday cake and sang for her as well. The attention to detail was very much appreciated.

For breakfast, I enjoyed a potato risotto with spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes and a poached egg drizzled with balsamic reduce – a great way to start the day!

The wedding venue

Blue Mountain Lodge is also the perfect place to have an unforgettable and magical wedding. The venue exudes romance and what could be more fantastical than an outdoor wedding surrounded by forest and nature. The charming stone chapel will lend your wedding old world charm and a traditional feel with its Ivy-clad walls and intimate seating.

Mpumalanga means ‘place where the sun rises’, a lucky blessing for a couple getting married in the breathtakingly gorgeous province. Blue Mountain Lodge’s wedding facilities are modern and can accommodate all the bridal couple’s needs, with indoor and outdoor facilities.

Couples can choose a sunset ceremony, next to a waterhole or an elevated spot with endless views of the Lowveld. With so much beauty around the possibilities are endless.

The lodge is also the perfect place to entertain clients or hold a business conference.
